Blu-ray Review: John Farrow’s The Big Clock Joins the Arrow Academy | Movement Music Box

Parasite essentially puts an absurdist spin on both the concept behind Hirokazu Kore-eda’s sentimental Shoplifters from last year and the bitter class commentary that underpins Nagisa Oshima’s 1969 film Boy. Bong positions Ki-taek and his family as grifters so adept at pulling off cons as a unit that they successfully convince the Parks to bring them all into their employ, in one capacity or another. Ki-jung becomes an “arts therapy” teacher for the Park clan’s precocious young son, Da-song (Jung Hyeon-jun), and, later, the rich family’s driver and nanny are pushed out of their jobs through elaborate scandals manufactured by the poor family, in order to install Ki-taek and Moon-gwang, respectively, into those roles.

Director Tate Taylor’s Ma ends in a ludicrous, offensive orgy of cartoonish ultraviolence, awash in blood and blazing with fire. But for most of its 99 minutes, the latest from Blumhouse Productions plays less like the horror experience promised by its marketing campaign and something more like a small-town mystery, fostering a tension that doesn’t exactly seem like it’s going to be released in a Grand Guignol haze of violence.

One virtuosic sequence shows a home video of one of Foreman’s friends emerging from a closet covered in fake blood, from which Foreman cuts to footage from a MacCaig film depicting a bloodied man emerging from a building in Belfast, which then cuts to an image on a television screen, which then becomes an image on an editing machine during a video interview with MacCaig. The sequence is essentially a reverse of one from The Patriot Game that begins on a TV screen and ends on the streets, and underscores the distance between Foreman and MacCaig, a maze of images in which father and son fail to meet each other.

A voiceover narration, written by Jarman and read in the elegant voice of Michael Gough, warns us that The Garden will not be interested in conclusions, and this elliptical film also proves uninterested in conclusiveness. “I want to share this wilderness of failure,” Gough intones, and by degrees we gather the wilderness he refers to is both the world in toto and the one the gay community has been abandoned to. At the end, as the martyred gay couple—we’ve seen them go through a modern 12 stations of the cross—sit down to a mournful gathering with the rest of the main cast, Gough speaks poetically of the lives lost to the AIDS epidemic: “Old age came quickly for my frosted generation. Cold, cold cold: They died so silently.”

Throughout the film, writer-directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt delight in playing up the precarious balance between Diamantino’s self-absorption and his sweet absent-mindedness. Unencumbered by an entourage, Diamantino rarely interacts with anyone besides his loving, supportive father, Chico (Chico Chapas), whose humble kindness is rather jarring when set against the palatial trappings of the family’s digs. Even on the soccer pitch, Diamantino doesn’t exude the focus one associates with an elite athlete, as he spends matches fantasizing about running with colossal, fluffy puppies—playful daydreams that somehow guide his movements as he slips past other players and scores goals.
